Techsailor was invited by the founders of 6woo because they were impressed by our elegance of design and understanding of social community. Some Techsailors folks had thoughts of starting some thing similar about two years back but never got down to doing it. We were excited to find people who had similiar interests and accepted the project readily, hoping to understand the China market better through this project.
One of interesting thing about 6woo is that its key focus is not on individuals but rather on families. We had a very clear objective, which is to build an online community for casual interaction amongst family members and between different families. At the same time, the "familiy" element must be strong enough such that members using 6woo must really feel like they are connected to their family instead of just interacting with other users on any Facebook group.
To strengthen the element of family, we made families as the smallest unit of interaction (as opposed to individual profiles). Members can create a "wu" ("house" in Mandarin) in 6woo and invite other family members into the "wu". Within each"wu", family members can interact with each other in ways like, live chat, photos / videos sharing, writing common blogs, posting events on calendar and planning family trips on the event planner. Instead of hooking up "friends" as in Facebook (linkage between members), different "wu"s can be linked and associated with each other as "Neighbor"s (linkage between families). Since 6woo must be simple enough for mum and dad to use, we came up with a really simple and intuitive interface. We chose warm colors with easy navigation with large buttons and font faces. A detailed usability analysis was performed to ensure that the layout was really simple enough even for the non-Internet-savvy crowd. Besides features commonly found on generic networks, we also built a Video Messaging sytem into 6woo to increase the stickenss of the network.
